EXPERIENCE
The soft clop of a distant chip shot mingles with the calls
of seagulls. Para-gliders float lazily in the distance, hanging gently
on updrafts from the nearby cliffs. It’s morning, and you’ve
just awakened to a view of the 18th fairway at one of the world’s
great golf courses—the site of Tiger Woods’s 2008 sudden-death
U.S. Open victory. And when your day at the links is finished, first-class
dining, recreational and spa experiences await just a short walk away.

THE
ROOMS
While many visitors may prefer one of the 25 units facing
the sea, the hotel’s exceptional design can also make for an excellent
view by itself. The classic 1900s American Craftsman architecture is
elegantly reflected in every room—from the Tiffany-inspired lamps
to the clean, rectangular lines of the hardwood furniture to the flood
of natural light that pours through your sliding glass doors. You’d
be forgiven for wondering if you’d waken up 100 years in the past.
The hallways have even been tastefully lined with period lithographs,
completing the fin-de-siècle vibe.
THE
SERVICE
The front desk may seem relatively small, but that’s
partly due to the sheer density of receptionists and bellmen hopping
swiftly to their tasks. It’s possible to approach the front desk
feeling strangely outnumbered by people eager to help you. And help
you they will—for example, the hotel can do more than just guarantee
a tee time; if you’d like to hold a private tournament, they’ll
cater your food and beverages and even provide professional scorekeeping.
THE
HIGHLIGHTS
On Thursday evenings, the A.R.
Valentien restaurant presents a communal “Artisan
Table” dinner, presenting seasonal menus in a relaxed setting perfect
for sharing war stories from the links outside with other guests. After
dinner, take a stroll through the nearby Torrey
Pines State Reserve. The namesake tree is
an endangered 30-foot desert conifer so rare that only about 7,000 wild
specimens exist—and most of them are right next to the hotel. You’ll
also find a scenic plateau, breathtaking cliffs, a wetland brimming with
life and possibly even glimpse a migrating whale. Many guests find their
first lap around the golf course is only the beginning of a series of
spectacular walks."
