LA JOLLA, California (March 2008) - The Lodge at Torrey Pines®, San Diego's only AAA Five Diamond Resort, has been selected as the premier hospitality site of the 2008 U.S. Open Championship being held June 9-15. Torrey Pines South Golf Course is only the second truly public golf course to host the U.S. Open, the jewel of the United States Golf Association's (USGA) competitions. In its 108th year, the U.S. Open is returning to Southern California for the first time in 60 years. This, second-oldest, USGA championship is one of the four major golf championships and the USGA's National Championship. Many of the game's greatest players have won this coveted championship title.
The Lodge at Torrey Pines® is adjacent to the 18th fairway of the South Course. Acclaimed golf course designer, Rees Jones, redesigned the Torrey Pines Golf Course at a cost of $3.5 million, creating a pristine playing environment that is "Open-ready" and primed for professional and amateur golfers alike. "We consider The Lodge at Torrey Pines to be, in essence, our clubhouse during the 2008 U.S. Open," notes Peter Bevacqua, recently appointed Chief Business Officer for the USGA. "Clearly, this spectacular, five-diamond property's phenomenal location directly adjacent to the 18th hole was an additional bonus of bringing the U.S. Open to Torrey Pines." "The Lodge at Torrey Pines® is thrilled to be in the center of the action for the 2008 U.S. Open Championship," said Steve Pelzer, Executive Vice President of Evans Hotels. "This championship is the crème de la crème of golf championships and with the recent course renovations golfers of all levels are now able to tee up like the pros." Torrey Pines is situated atop cliffs towering above the Pacific Ocean. Golfers have spectacular views of the coastline, deep ravines, and surrounded by the rare Torrey Pine trees. The Lodge at Torrey Pines® boasts guaranteed tee-times for hotel guests.
