Early 1900s Craftsman
In its brief lifespan The Lodge at Torrey Pines has been hailed as an "instant classic" and "California landmark" and we can only concur. California connoisseurs have long been drawn to Torrey Pines State Reserve with its abundant native flora, intimate beaches, golden cliffs, and absolutely otherworldly view of the rolling Pacific Ocean. The nearby coastal town of La Jolla is equally appealing with rugged rocks, tide pools en masse and a delightful curving coastline matched with posh neighborhoods, fine dining and a laissez-faire sophisticated charm.

The Lodge at Torrey Pines is the manmade counterpart to this dramatic natural area. The six and one-half acre property sits immediately adjacent to the 18th green of the famed Torrey Pines Golf Course and just a short walk from the Torrey Pines State Reserve.

The Beach at Torrey Pines

Paying homage to the California Craftsman style of architecture of the early 1900s and the well-known examples of Greene & Greene homes in Pasadena, the architects kept things true and homey, respecting the natural landscape and beautifully integrating indoor and outdoor living with outside "sleeping" porches, a natural color palette, shingle and sandstone-bluff exteriors, clinker-brick masonry, rich Jatoba woodwork and natural stone surfaces. Everything is in true Greene & Greene style, and the structure is made to look like an exact copy of the period's and Tongue and Groove approach—a style that nowadays, of course, is no longer appropriate for earthquake proof building.

Upon arrival guests are greeted by doormen in kilted Scottish dress and the vista of the Lodge's grand porte cochère with Oriental rugs, fine art and stained glass that casts colorful dapples over floors and walls. You're immediately transported 100 years back and the serene feeling that settles over you upon arrival never leaves you.

View from Pool Area

Behind The Lodge is a heated pool with poolside cabanas, whirlpool, croquet lawn, and a large terrace with chaise lounges for basking in the Southern California sun. The 171 guest rooms, including seven suites—most with lovely views, patios and fireplaces---are cozy with Tiffany-style lamps, a rich leather chaise lounge by the bed, oil-rubbed bronze fixtures and deep-soak tubs and feature all the amenities expected from a world-class hotel. Furniture and fixtures were custom made. The staff is well trained and service impeccable.

There are more than 13,000 square feet of meeting and banquet space, a 9,500 square-foot full-service spa and two restaurants, including A.R. Valentien, which serves contemporary California cuisine under the helm of classically French-trained executive chef Jeff Jackson who hails from Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica. No expenses were spared to bring in the best products and staff.

The spa menu includes a French-inspired thalassotherapy treatment, an Ayurvedic treatment from ancient India, Oriental bodywork, and a ritual featuring the earthly delights of Aboriginal Australia. The treatments were designed to "literally transport clients to other cultures," according to Spa Director Darcie DeBartelo. Fitness classes include yoga, Pilates, T'ai Chi.

"We want them to actually feel the ancient wisdom of the Orient, the centuries-old principles of Ayurveda, the vigorous power of the ocean, and the earthy knowledge of the Aboriginal people. Our rituals are as much a way to teach guests the traditions of other cultures as they are to soothe," says DeBartelo.

The Lodge's retreat-like atmosphere makes you want to stay in, play golf, maybe enjoy a stroll in the state park and lounge in the spa. But nearby attractions may just pull you out for shopping in La Jolla or tony Del Mar, the Del Mar race track, an exploration of quaint California living in North County coastal towns or a trip downtown to stroll in the Gaslamp district with its many dining and good shopping options. Or how about taking out a yacht in the San Diego harbor? The Lodge offers car service by Mercedes. With close proximity to Orange County and Los Angeles, the location is really ideal for a quick getaway. And we guarantee, you'll really feel like you got away.
